Preparing for Fasika – Photo Essay

April 27, 2016 – Excitement for Fasika, Ethiopian Orthodox Easter, is building. Everyone has been fasting with a vegan diet for two months of Lent and counting down the days until the holiday.

Palm Sunday

 

Rings made from the palm leaves blessed in church – vaguely reminiscent of Axumite structures but when I asked, people said there was no connection. Axumite was a very early Orthodox Christian civilization in northern Ethiopia.

 

Fresh coat of paint on local butcher shops about to be opened for the first time in two months!
